Just thinkin' out loud, here.

If a couple of people were toying with the idea of moving to Boston, what would they need to know?

my first thought, being not specific to Boston?

Coastal cold in winter is a damp cold that creeps into your bones...vs the dry cold of the midwest. Guess which one is easier to warm up from?

I actually kinda like a nice damp cold. Winters here are murder on my skin.

Having lived in both the Godforsaken Midwest and Boston, I'd choose Boston in a heartbeat. No comparison whatsoever. Boston rocks hard.

I miss it on odd days. On even days I'm struck with how much SF rocks.

On both even and odd days, I want a wormhole between the two.

wormholes

I wish that wormhole existed, because I would completely work my NYC job, but live in Boston and weekend on the west coast.

They need to know that Boston kicks ass, and that a person replying to this thread might be thinking of moving back there, herself. (Coincidence!) That person might even have a special filter in place for this. :)

On the topic of People: that's been my experience here in MSP for the most part. It's hard to make friends with the folks who have lived here all their lives.

The Twin Cities: An area so hostile to outsiders, there's a Web site (http://www.imnotfromhere.com) for meeting fellow transplants.

Yes, this is exactly the sort of information I was looking for.

I hadn't realized housing was quite as expensive as it's turning out to be, but I'm given to understand that one can get along reasonably well without a car, so I suppose it's a wash.

Jobs are hard to come by, eh? Is that because it's a college town, because the market is bad, or do you just have to know people?

Basically, Katie and were talking about how we're having ennui and malaise, and about how we really don't have too much going on here, and I brought up Boston. That's all it was.

they have to incorporate the word "Bitchin'" into their everyday vocabulary. Housing is insanely expensive compared to here.

Bwahaha, Nordeast!

We would miss you terribly if you go. Does that count?

[identity profile] mr-bad-example.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, it counts for quite a lot.

But you'd have an excuse to start coming to cons on the East Coast!

I'm almost sure Katie would be able to find work cobbling together a couple of ESL jobs, at least until something more stable came along. There are so many of those schools and they're always hiring experienced people.

Apartments are expensive but (unlike NYC) you get a lot of apartment for what you pay for.

Y'know, one of the things that's come out of this discussion is the fact that tech jobs aren't so plentiful out there. It could be the excuse she and I both need to make a career change.

boston rent is stupid expensive. landlords are sketchier. (at least in the medford/somerville area). It's like San Francisco expensive. So.. for my money... i choose the west coast.

the winters are slushy-er.

cars are way way optional.

haven't biked much in boston. the green line tracks skeer me, and whatever man, i went to school on a very large hill.

if you roadtrip.. it is ESSENTIAL to plan around rush hours. or start a road trip at 9pm.

it's a lot more classist than here.

for whatever it's worth, i've never had a problem meeting people in msp. *shrug* and it's easier for me to get laid here than on the east coast. :P
