I've been a huge fan of Parker fountain pen inks for a while now, but I never had much luck with their pens. The first Parker pen I tried--a Reflex--just plain stopped writing after only a couple of months. I couldn't do anything to make it work, although admittedly, I didn't try very hard because it was a five-dollar pen. So I stayed away from Parker pens for a while.

Then last month, my usual work pen ran out of ink, so I swung by my favorite art store for a replacement. They had Parker Vectors on sale, so I figured what the hell.

Sweet fancy Moses, this is a good pen. Smooth writer, nice clean line, never fails to start even after not being used for a weekend. I think this even outperforms my 40-dollar Waterman. It's also got this cool bare-bones "tube that ink comes out of" form factor. I'm thinking about picking another one up so I have one around the house.

So I guess if there's a moral, it's this: Never become the kind of person who writes about fountain pens on their Livejournal.

That's so weird: my Parker is this cheapie little tube of plastic I got only because it was the only pen I could find that would hold a certain type of ink cartridge, a cartridge I owned in abundance due to a previous fountain pen I loved and bought many refills for but then it broke and then I lost it, so I was stuck with hella refills. The Cross is my weapon-of-choice, but it can't hold those cartridges, but it does have a plunger reservoir which I refill from a bottle of coffee-brown ink. I will check out that Vector, however.

I will make my way out to Wet Paint this weekend. You, for your part, should swing by Lunalux, in the Loring neighborhood, if you haven't already. It's the only store in that strip of shops and restaurants at which I have any desire to throw my money.

I've never tried Cross pens myself, but [livejournal.com profile] gismonda has an Ion that seems pretty nice.

I'm definitely going to check out Lunalux. I looked at their Web page today, and they seem awesome.
