So, for example, if you want your SCA name to be Edward of Shaftesbury, you have to document that the name Edward was in use during the Middle Ages and that there was a place called Shaftesbury. That's how it works. All of this is by way of saying that I learned something today that caused me a pang of regret for 15 lost years.
