Busy weekend.
Mar. 13th, 2005 11:10 pmI did a lot this weekend. Last night,
gismonda and I went to see The Merchant of Venice with my friend Catherine and her partner Jana. This adaptation ofThe Merchant of Venice is apparently the first film version of that play in the sound era, and it's easy to understand why. It's a tough one to do in a relatively enlightened time. Shylock represents an absolutely vile stereotype (although on the other hand, he gets one of the most memorable speeches in the English language -- "If you prick us, do we not bleed?" -- and is arguably one of the most tragic characters in all of theatre), but the film doesn't portray him as a comic figure at all. It's a very warts-and-all interpretation of the text, which I respect. I was also a little worried that between Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons, there'd be enough ham to get us through Easter, but I was pleased to be proven wrong.
After the film, I went to Bondage-A-Go-Go, which I haven't done in a very long time. It was nice to get out again.
This afternoon I went to the Ink Lab and got a consultation for my next tattoo. Apparently both the design and my master plan are eminently workable. I have an appointment for next Saturday to get it started. I'm looking forward to new ink; it's been too long.
