Man I am just a real shit of a dude
Aug. 13th, 2004 07:49 pmI went to the circus last night. Gave me my usual bout of Post-Seeing-People-Accomplishing-Cooler-Things-Than-I-Ever-Have depression. I hate it when people can do cooler stuff than I can. it isn't envy, precisely; rather, it's just that seeing extraordinary things always throws into contrast my lack of ability. It's time to do something about that. Drastic measures. No "course at the community college" nonsense.
RESOLVED: I shall attend the Coney Island Circus Sideshow School.
I'm going next spring, provided they're still running it. Hold me to it.
In a strange way, reading the new articles about Julia Child that made me feel a bit better today. Not about her passing -- she will be sorely missed, and anybody who enjoys food owes her an enormous debt of gratitude -- but the fact that she changed her life and achieved extraordinary things when she was 32. When she was growing up, her family employed a cook -- she didn't even begin learning to cook until she was my age. She didn't publish her first book until she was 49.
I think I just found a new role model.
