I went to the circus last night. Gave me my usual bout of Post-Seeing-People-Accomplishing-Cooler-Things-Than-I-Ever-Have depression. I hate it when people can do cooler stuff than I can. it isn't envy, precisely; rather, it's just that seeing extraordinary things always throws into contrast my lack of ability. It's time to do something about that. Drastic measures. No "course at the community college" nonsense.

RESOLVED: I shall attend the Coney Island Circus Sideshow School.

I'm going next spring, provided they're still running it. Hold me to it.

In a strange way, reading the new articles about Julia Child that made me feel a bit better today. Not about her passing -- she will be sorely missed, and anybody who enjoys food owes her an enormous debt of gratitude -- but the fact that she changed her life and achieved extraordinary things when she was 32. When she was growing up, her family employed a cook -- she didn't even begin learning to cook until she was my age. She didn't publish her first book until she was 49.

I think I just found a new role model.

Unfortunately, the resemblance ends there. I make jello and burn it.

Actually, yeah, the three things I'm most interested in learning are the human blockhead, fire eating, and outside talking.

What I'm thinking is to go to the sideshow school, then put together something for Fringe maybe the year after.

i don't know what outside talking is! tell me!
jim rose's autobiography talks a little bit about how to do some things, like the human blockhead. apparently anyone could do it, but i've never tried to stick a spoon in my nose.

An outside talker is what's commonly known as a "barker," although that is extremely not the preferred term.
