A couple of weeks ago, I finally heard that "Crazy" song by Gnarls Barkley all the kids are talking about. I hadn't paid it a lot of mind, because somewhere I read that it was a cover of the Seal song of the same name. It isn't, of course, although GB are responsible for that thoroughly unnecessary cover of "Gone Daddy Gone," which I frankly consider a strike against them.
"Crazy," on the other hand, has become one of my favorite songs. They totally nail that old-school 70's soul sound, with the falsetto and the string section and the whole megillah. It would fit perfectly into a set on AM radio between the Chi-Lites and the Delfonics. I actually did think the song was a cover the first time I heard it. I saw GB perform it on Letterman a few weeks ago, and my first thought--hand to God--was, "Damn, I'm glad somebody covered that song. I haven't heard it in years." Well, no, I hadn't heard it in years. I hadn't heard it in thirty-four years, had I?
