I kick it old skool, I kick it new skool
May. 30th, 2006 12:15 amWhen it comes to shaving, I don't go for all the gewgaws and gimcrackery shoveled out by the razor companies as the Next Greatest Thing Oh My God What Are You Still Doing Shaving With Only Three Blades Here's A Nickel Go Buy Yourself A Hunk Of Chipped Obsidian You Friggin' Troglodyte. Most of the reason I went old-skool to begin with was in reaction to the Gillette Fusion. I mean, come on, that's just foolishness, there. Sorry, Gillette. Where you're going, I can't follow.
In the spirit of avoidance of novelty shaving products, I have heretofore eschewed the HeadBlade. I was strictly a Mach 3 guy for both face and head until I bought the Merkur. Until I figure out all the tricks and angles of using that, I've been using it only on my face, and shaving my head with the Mach 3. (And by the way, the Merkur is working out fairly nicely. I just need to figure out how to get that one spot on my neck where the hair grows in like eight different directions and I'll be golden.) But then today I was at Wal-Mart (I know. Someday, remind me to explain my Doctrine of Punitive Shopping), and I saw that they had HeadBlades for ten bucks. I figured that was a reasonable price for a trial run, so I bought one and a bottle of "HeadLube" (shut up) aftershave in the "Glossy" formulation.
The vedict? Meh. It was fine--no better or worse than the Mach 3--when I used it on the relatively even parts of my head. Unfortunately, my head has a few grooves and furrows that make a perfect shave a little bit tricky. The HeadBlade didn't handle those areas quite as well. It also didn't do too well getting the hair right above my ears. I've only had one shave with the thing, so I'll be giving it a few more chances. Maybe I'll run it through another pack of blades before I render final judgment.
I'm also ambivalent about the HeadLube (SHUT UP). I like that it doesn't leave my head feeling really greasy, at least no more so than usual, but I'm not convinced that it makes my head any shinier than usual. I have the kind of skin that, shall we say, makes its own gravy, so shiny and slick is sort of the default condition. On the other hand, it does leave my scalp a little bit softer than the Body Shop aftershave, so maybe it's a keeper.
So, to sum up: No, as a matter of fact I do NOT have anything more important I could be doing.
