Operation Shaving Optimization continues with the acquisition of an old-skool double-edged safety razor. I pondered the "Classic 1904" model for the cool-looking handle, but realized I'm too hamfisted to use anything with a handle that short.

I'm not gonna lie, it wasn't the best shave I've ever had. My face feels a little more raw and much less smooth than it does after a shave with the Mach 3. Double-edged razors don't have a pivoting head like cartridge razors do, so there's a lot of fussing and fidgeting to get the right angle. I'm given to understand that once you figure that out, you start getting really great shaves. We shall see. Lord knows if there's one thing I do well, it's fussing and fidgeting.

I've also been experimenting with different shaving cream. (I have no hair and I take godawful care of my skin, so shaving stuff is my only Product addiction. Shut up.) I picked up a tube of Crabtree & Evelyn's Sienna cream about three weeks ago. I have to admit, at first I was a little underwhelmed. It shaved fine, but it didn't seem to lubricate nearly as well as Proraso. What it did have going for it was the scent--I could shave with it, and I wouldn't even need cologne afterward. I'd been using it a couple of times a week, just when I needed to be sure my head smelled good.

Then I used it last night, and just on a whim I decided to see how much lather I could build up. That extra lather made all the difference in the world. So I've completely changed my mind on the stuff. It's excellent, it's just a little tempermental.

And by the way, let me send some love to ClassicShaving.com. I ordered the razor on Monday night, and it was waiting for me when I came home on Thursday.
