Mar. 11th, 2006 01:50 amA year or so ago,
gismonda grabbed me a sample of Burt's Bees Bay Rum cologne. I use so little cologne that I'm only just now starting to run out, and I've found out it's not being made anymore. I'm trying to find a suitable replacement.
I got into Bay Rum about 15 years ago. It's a very old, very traditional kind of cologne. I had it used on me once in an old-school barbershop in Des Moines, so I went to the drugstore and bought a bottle. Unfortunately, it was the cheap stuff, and it ended up being a bit on the acrid side. Smelled a little like kerosene, actually. Then about a year ago, I tried some of the Burt's Bee's. It was very nice: warm and spicy and mellow. And of course, as soon as I discovered it, they stopped making it.
I did a little Googling around today. The stuff sold by Caswell Massey is apparently good, but I just can't get past the sentence "Once you get used to its seductive aroma, you'll be hooked, too." I also found this recipe in an old Usenet post, but then I started thinking about the idea of "homemade cologne" and by the time I stopped giggling, it was 3:30 in the afternoon already.
So, the search continues. I entertained the idea of finding something else retro and traditional, but evidently they don't make Hai Karate anymore, either.
