I've always been a sucker for a good swashbuckler. I grew up watching reruns of Zorro on the Disney Channel. One night TBS ran Errol Flynn's The Adventures of Robin Hood back to back for an entire evening, and I must have watched it four times in a row. I have followed with great interest the careers of Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, writers of the Pirates of the Caribbean films and The Mask of Zorro--they're pretty much the go-to-guys for old-skool adventuresome fun.

This is why I'm kicking myself for not having read Captain Alatriste the moment it came out. I picked up the paperback edition about two weeks ago and promptly devoured it. It's as if Arturo Perez-Reverte came up to me and said, "Mateo, mi amigo, today I write a book for you."

Needless to say, I was gratified to find out that a film is being made. Starring Viggo Mortensen, who is rapidy becoming this century's Errol Flynn. This may be the film I'm most looking forward to seeing this year.
